WHAT IS PESACRE

PESACRE is a non-governmental and non-profit institution which develops research and extension activities for colonist, rubber tapper, and indigenous producer groups. PESACRE’s main goal is to improve the standard of living for these producers, thereby diminishing the pressure they might feel to convert their forests to other uses. PESACRE also promotes the efficient management of natural resources and adoptation of agroforestry practices and systems which consider environmental, social and economic impacts, as well as providing sustainable production alternatives for small-scale rural producers.

The institution grew out of a 1985 institutional agreement between the Federal University of the State of Acre (UFAC) and the University of Florida. An initial training course, facilitated by these two academic partners, lead to the development of the PESA methodology (Farming System Research and Extension). Over time, professionals from research and extension institutions such as EMBRAPA, FUNTAC, INPA, EMATER and UFAC were integrated into a viable working group, allowing the formation of PESACRE in 1990.
